There was a bed and a table in my room, but it was so full of bugs and spider webs. It was summer at the time. I remember when I first moved in, I went to get a clothes rack to get spider webs. I remember every time I went home at night, the moment I turned on the light, I saw a lot of bugs and black things. I went to buy a sticky supplement and put it under my bed. I woke up in the morning and it was really...

It's so disgusting. There are so many bugs, spiders, and other things. It's like a bug map. My idea at the time was to save a dollar and pay the tuition fee. I didn't think too much. Anyway, the first condition of finding a house is cheap. Then it's close to the company. In fact, other cheap rents are not too bad in Waterloo. Because the price of the house in Waterloo was very cheap. If I live with my classmates, sometimes the cheapest one is only 300 or 400 yuan a month.

The main reason why my rent was so cheap was because I only lived with 2-3 people. I didn't know how much it would cost to live there for more than a year. Living there was not that much of a deal for me. I knew I would move out after 4 months. You can see a zero here. I paid all the rent for the 4 months I was in the US.

After talking about the biggest expenses, I want to talk about my income. Next is scholarship. I had about $1,000 in my first semester. I remember that high school grades were only 80 points or more. This is really nothing, basically everyone has it. In addition, every semester I went to school, I had a scholarship of $2,500. This is what all international students have in our school's engineering department.

The tuition fee is very expensive, plus you are an international student, so it's like giving you a discount on your tuition. You can get a scholarship of $2,500 for every semester you go to school. There are eight semester here, so it's 20,000 yuan.

Then I got a $3,000 bonus for every class I took. This is a bonus for international students. You have to apply for it yourself. I wanted to try it out. But I was not up to the requirement. Or someone else needed it more. I didn't get it, so it's fine. So I told them that this money could help me to reduce the financial burden on my family. I'm not sure about the exact reason. I guess it was because international students had better financial conditions.

and there were very few people applying for the scholarship. They didn't ask me any more questions and gave me the scholarship for $3,000. I was very happy and grateful. After getting this money, I could pay more tuition fees. They gave me the money for every semester. So it's $3,000 x 8 = $24,000.

After having the first job experience, it was super easy to find a job. From this table, you can see that my internship salary has been rising every semester. Until I was in the black-and-white internship.

Then the 7500 is the one I was told I was screwed up. At that time, I had to find a job that was completely unrelated to my major. The previous work experience was also completely unrelated. The previous few times were more like hardware and production line work experience. So this time I was always stuck at work. But I know that the transfer is very hard.

I just need to survive this time and then have that one work experience and then it will be much better. Then I slowly started to work at a normal technology company. The salary slowly followed. The last semester was probably the peak of my four-year university life. At that time, I went to a store in Seattle, USA with my best friend.

We live in a high-end hotel management apartment. Every week, there are people cleaning my room. Tickets and accommodation are all company-owned. It also gives us a very high salary. This semester, I earned about $30,000. If I convert it into a bonus, it's about $38,000. These four are the main expenses and income of my four-year university life. If you count it like this, the total expense of these four years is about $1,800. About NT$40,000, less than NT$10,000 a year.

Then you will say that I missed out on food and other nonsense expenses. Yes, that's right. But I don't think it's necessary to calculate these things. Because even if I didn't go to school today, these are also the expenses of my normal life. To be honest, the expense of eating and other things is really, really low. Low to the point where there is no need to calculate. Let me give you an example. I remember there was a semester where we didn't have a network.

My classmates and I used our $25 a month phone to go online for 4 months with the phone as a router. I remember the traffic was like, after using more than 50MB, your network speed will automatically drop to 32KB per second and you can use it for free. Since we lived very close to the school, we thought that most of the time, if we really needed to use the internet, we could just walk to the school to use it.

And the school is open 24 hours a day. We can go in anytime. Just by these small places to save money. And I remember our favorite thing at that time was to go to McDonald's to eat Junior Chicken and McDouble. I remember it was super cheap. Two hamburgers at that time were about 2.5 yuan. And then there was a Chinese buffet that I ate enough at 6.99 at noon. Anyway, how to save money at that time is how to save money.

Oh, right, if you have applied to a foreign school, they usually give you a cost of a textbook. The textbook for the regular version is very expensive. Some books cost 200-300 NTD. I bought a second-hand one at the beginning and sold it after using it. So it didn't cost much. Okay, let me summarize what I said today. I personally think that studying abroad doesn't have to cost that much money. At least for me, I used numbers to summarize the result.

If you are willing to, you can save money from small places. Of course, my example back then was not suitable for everyone. Plus, not every school and every major has the opportunity to do so. And this industry is also a long time ago. Now the tuition and rent have also increased quite a lot.

I was also very lucky, because if my family's economy was really bad, I wouldn't even have the chance to study abroad. And I didn't even know how to earn money and get a scholarship at the beginning. So I had to pay for my tuition at home. But I was really lucky to be able to pay for my tuition and living expenses. That was a huge accomplishment for me. It was also a very important goal for me.

Actually, my friends and classmates were like that too. Some of them were even more than me. Because they were just ordinary people, not students. I learned different values and knowledge about money from them. Through the internship, I learned how to make money and how hard it is to make money.

Although my current job has nothing to do with the science I studied at that time, in the eyes of many people, this may be a waste of time or money. Of course, if I could go back in time, I would definitely choose computer science and CS without hesitation. But I think this university is definitely worth it.

I found a new direction in life. I met a lot of good friends. I have six internship experiences as soon as I graduated. I learned how to face and deal with a lot of things independently.
