The Area 51 Camo Dudes Were NOT Happy I Did This

I'm coming up now on the corner where

the Area 51 employee bus usually drops

off a group of workers at the end of the

shift. I'm in my white bus, which tends

to turn a few heads around here.

I'm hoping this time to time the drive

to see the real white bus. It's about

5:30, so it should be any minute now.

As we pick up our adventures around the

Area 51 perimeter, we'll be taking a

look today at a particular hilltop near

the front gate.

Stretching across Tikaboo Valley, the

long dusty Groom Lake Road takes you to

a yellow gate with some now iconic

warning signs telling you what will

happen if you're foolish enough to cross

the border.

For the casual Area 51 tourist, the road

ends here.

But today, we're going to be following

the border markers to a lesser-known

location, one that lets you see a little

bit more than a yellow metal gate and

some warning signs.

Today, we'll be climbing Hawk Eye Hill,

Hey everybody, welcome back. So, today I

am back for another follow-up with Jörg

of Dreamland Resort.

>> Hey everybody. So we are going to the

front gate of Area 51. It's been a

little while since I've been back there,

but today we are going to show you the

actual physical guard shack at the front

gate. A lot of tourists don't know that

you can actually hike up a certain hill

and get a view of that guard shack, much

to the chagrin of the camo dudes. So

without further ado, let's get to it.

>> Let's do this. All right.

Heading down Groom Lake Road through the

sprawling field of Joshua trees, I can

faintly see a strangely shaped vehicle

in the distance.

Getting closer reveals it to be just a

grader, not Bob Lazar's rocket car or

anything.

I'm not sure who's responsible for

maintaining this road, whether it's the

BLM or DOD, but it does get relatively

frequent maintenance given that it's one

of the two main access roads to the

base.

We're coming up now on the yellow gate

marking the end of the line for all

non-base cleared vehicles.

Several surveillance cameras and of

course the road sensors have long since

notified the security of our approach.

All right, so we've made a quick stop at

the front gate to

to view the actual guard shack. We're

going to be making a snowy hike

up these hills right here

directly behind me.

To do that, we're going to park a little

bit further down the road and

start in this wash,

make our way up there till we get to the

the orange posts marking the border.

The top portion of Hawkeye Hill where

this turnout is is on public land, but

those roads leading up to it are in the

restricted area and come up from the

guard shack. So it's not inconceivable

that there could be a camo dude up there

waiting for us.

All right, so we've parked up a little

bit further back up the road and we're

getting ready to make our ascent. You

ready to do this? Let's do it. All

right.

As we pack our bags and make our way

towards the wash where we begin our

ascent, suddenly the camo dude that has

been watching us from afar seems to

realize what we're about to do and is

not pleased.

Really?

Oh, he's mad.

After a period of honking and flashing

his high beams, he's now realized that

we aren't so easily deterred and seems

to have calmed down a bit for now.

Luckily the sun has been hitting this

face of the hill, so the snow and ice is

pretty much melted off making for a bit

of an easier climb.

As always when hiking near the perimeter

of Area 51 or any other restricted area,

it's wise to exercise caution to avoid

accidentally crossing the boundary line.

Here at Area 51, most of the border is

designated with orange posts sticking up

out of the ground, so I'm always on the

lookout for those. I also recommend

having a good offline mapping app with

you that has a public land overlay so

you can see where exactly BLM land stops

and the military area begins. It never

hurts to be too careful.

Taking a brief pause about halfway up

the hill, let's look back towards the

highway. We can see Groom Lake Road

here.

There's Whitesides Mountain.

And over here is the Bald Mountain

facility.

Hey, there it is.

All right. Well, we just made it. The

[clears throat] wind's getting pretty

crazy up here, so I'm going to switch

over to my other camera.

And let's take a closer look at this

guard shack.

And here we have eyes on the guard

shack.

Normally, this would be hidden from view

from Groom Lake Road, and it's only

visible by climbing this hill that we're

on now.

Any vehicles entering or exiting Area 51

through the front gate would pass

through this guard shack, including the

white bus that arrives in the morning

and leaves around 5:00 in the evening.

>> Here's a small outbuilding of some sort

over there behind the guard shack. Some

sort of storage, maybe.

Interestingly, there's a sign over here

advising drivers to buckle up.

Panning to the left of the guard shack

up this hill, we have another structure.

This one is a relatively recent

construction, at least compared to the

guard shack itself.

On these towers, we have cameras and

microwave surveillance.

As you can see here, the camera on that

pole is pointed directly at us

currently. So, even if we're outside of

the view of the camo dude on the hill

behind us, they can certainly see us at

the guard shack through this camera.

Zooming in, we can see that the camo

dude is watching us through binoculars.

After gathering some footage up here for

a while, suddenly there was some

activity at the front gate with a camo

dude truck suddenly appearing headed

towards the hill where the other camo

dude was sitting.

>> Looks like we have a shift change of

some sort. The camo dude that's been

watching us is getting relieved of duty

and this new truck appears to have two

camo dudes in it.

Given that they're certainly aware that

we're making a video right now, they

have their face coverings pulled up.

That guy needs to put it in four-wheel

drive. It looks like he's losing some

traction there.

Not long after the arrival of the new

camo dudes, a distinctive sound is

echoing through the valley and we turn

and look and a helicopter is rounding

the hill just past the guard shack and

quickly approaching Hawkeye Hill where

we're standing.

Coming in extremely low like this allows

us to get a unique view of the Area 51

security helicopter given that we're

above it. As discussed in previous

videos, these helicopters may look like

regular Black Hawks at first glance, but

they're actually a unique variant only

found at Area 51. They're known as the

HH-60U Ghost Hawk with operators

belonging to a unit often referred to as

Ghost Squadron.

The Ghost Hawk made a couple low passes

to get a close look at us and made a

couple circles around the car before

continuing along its perimeter sweep.

We decided at that point to make the

hike back down and gave these camel

dudes a break from watching us for a

while.

As we got to the bottom, the second set

of camel dudes that had arrived

apparently weren't any happier to see us

and they gave us a bunch of angry honks

and flashes of their high beams again as

if to send us off with one last parting

gift. What's his issue now?

Don't know.

He just flashed his high beams, too.
