0:00

welcome you to this afternoon's session

0:01

of the effect of soiling on pv

0:04

performance please bear with me because

0:07

this is the second time only that I've

0:09

delivered this this content so I'm sure

0:12

still trying to get the delivery correct

0:15

my name is Michael middlemist I am the

0:18

category manager for renewables here at

0:21

the sea wood group I operate out of our

0:24

office here in Tampa Florida but our our

0:28

main headquarters and manufacturing

0:31

plant is in the northeast of England my

0:34

role is to oversee our renewable testing

0:37

range so I look after our solar testers

0:40

and I travel to sites around the US and

0:44

around the world training on our

0:47

products and also getting feedback from

0:49

the community the solar community on how

0:52

we can improve our offering including

0:56

our instruments and our our software

1:00

package now recently something that

1:03

really came to my attention on a site

1:05

out in California was soiling and the

1:10

panels were really badly soiled so this

1:13

kind of inspired me to create this

1:16

presentation that I'm gonna give to you

1:17

today about soiling we're gonna cover

1:20

what it is how it happens where it

1:23

happens what we can do to fix it and how

1:26

we can prove to the user of the PVC so

1:32

the owner of the plant how we can how we

1:33

can prove that the soiling is really

1:36

causing a loss of generation and in turn

1:39

a loss of return on their investment so

1:44

before we get started I must just read

1:46

out this brief disclaimer to you ok so

1:49

basically this presentation is not to be

1:52

considered any replacements for any of

1:54

the standards that I reference reference

1:57

figures are correct at the time of this

2:00

presentation for any clarification

2:03

please contact me or a representative

2:05

representative see would we don't accept

2:08

any responsibility for any of the

2:10

information we give here that is used in

2:11

error and no part of this presentation

2:14

shall be deemed a form of contract or of

2:19

training and please do refer back to me

2:22

for any queries persons performing any

2:25

electrical tests I must be fully

2:27

competent to do so and the safety of our

2:30

operators is the absolute paramount

2:34

subject we should be we should be

2:36

looking at your safety is paramount ok

2:42

so in this presentation I'm going to be

2:44

describing PV testing we're going to be

2:48

connecting the PV systems I'm going to

2:50

show you examples of that so please do

2:52

be careful and one of the things we do

2:55

need to cover when you are in the field

2:57

is your personal protection equipment ok

3:01

so do be very aware of what you're

3:03

connecting to

3:04

we need rubber insulated gloves it's

3:06

your first line of defense use leather

3:09

gloves also PV systems can operate up to

3:12

a thousand volts 1500 volts so our flash

3:15

is a real concern and unfortunately not

3:18

all PV systems are clearly labeled and

3:21

that means you might not be aware of

3:23

what you're connecting to so perform an

3:26

on-site evaluation before you connect

3:28

the unit ok so now that's the health and

3:31

safety kind of stuff out of the way

3:34

what exactly is soiling ok what what is

3:38

soiling we say this word soiling and we

3:43

need to really narrow down what that

3:46

covers because it does cover a broad

3:48

spectrum of things so the term soiling

3:53

is used to describe an accumulation of

3:55

snow of dust of dirt of leaves and bird

4:00

droppings on PV panels so that's what we

4:03

call soiling ok now the performance of a

4:07

PV module decreases by surface soiling

4:11

and the PV power loss increases with an

4:14

increase in the quantity of soiling on

4:17

the PV panel so in real terms all that

4:21

means is if you have a little bit of

4:22

dust you have a little bit of loss

4:25

if you have a lot of dust you have a lot

4:26

of loss so it scales up

4:28

okay so soiling is a big issue and I

4:32

don't think the end user okay maybe the

4:35

homeowner the business owner of the

4:37

plant owner they don't realize how bad

4:39

it is okay and we need to quantify that

4:42

for them so that's what we're going to

4:44

talk about today

4:45

what is soiling and how do we prove it

4:47

to that end user well I have a nice

4:50

little phrase here which hopefully could

4:52

help us okay soiling equals shading

4:55

which equals power loss okay and one

4:59

thing I did not own here which I

5:00

probably should have power loss equals

5:03

loss of cash okay so that's where it's

5:06

going to affect you the most in whatever

5:09

kind of system you have installed for

5:11

instance if you're a utility scale

5:13

installer and your panels are soiled

5:15

you're not going to be able to output it

5:17

enough power and therefore you will

5:19

bring down the R or Y similar for a

5:21

residential kleiner definitely for a PPA

5:24

a power purchase agreement okay when we

5:27

have that on a commercial building or

5:29

utility scale we need to guarantee power

5:31

output and if we can't do that well then

5:34

we're not going to be able to to honor

5:39

the the power purchase agreement that

5:41

we've made so soiling equal shading

5:43

which equals power loss soiling also

5:46

does a couple of other things which

5:47

we're going to cover a little bit

5:48

further on in the presentation so as I

5:55

mentioned in the previous slide that

5:58

soiling differs okay so it's very rare

6:02

that we immediately get one hundred

6:03

percent 80% soiling on the panels so it

6:06

accumulates the dust buildup and

6:08

aggregates over time okay and dust

6:11

layers so the layer of dust on the

6:14

panels could vary depending on your

6:16

environment in your location and does

6:19

can be generated by many sources so

6:21

obviously when traffic cattle maybe even

6:23

volcanic fallout which is not you know

6:26

entirely common but it does happen but

6:29

the purpose of this slide is if dose

6:32

gets worse over time then we need to

6:35

schedule our maintenance

6:36

to prevent that does that soil a over

6:40

that time period okay so when we first

6:43

install the panel's perhaps there will

6:46

be no soiling okay a month later there

6:49

will be two months later there will be

6:50

even more so we need to plan in our

6:53

schedule of cleaning maintenance in line

6:56

with the environment that you're dealing

6:58

with so if you have if you're in an area

7:01

where you have a lot of dust okay a lot

7:04

of sand

7:04

perhaps you're in the Middle East you're

7:06

in a very hot country perhaps you're in

7:08

the Mojave Desert in California or

7:10

you're somewhere in the middle of

7:11

Hyderabad or Buda Pradesh in India all

7:17

very hot dusty locations we should be

7:22

very very careful and we should monitor

7:25

that does and what kind of time scale we

7:30

think that it's going to increase with

7:31

okay but not only environmentally but

7:34

kind of where we are in position to

7:36

other things around us so if we're very

7:39

much near a highway okay and the plant

7:42

is right there we could have pollution

7:43

that is affecting in causing soil a onto

7:47

the panel's themselves so be very

7:49

conscious of where you are this picture

7:52

on the right-hand side that you can see

7:55

of the presentation this actually was

7:57

just north of Fresno in California and

8:00

this was again we're in the middle of

8:03

the desert here and this client in

8:05

particular was having issues with his

8:08

instrument his solar see with solar

8:11

instruments and he was telling me

8:13

Michael your instrument is not giving me

8:16

accurate results I should be getting

8:18

this from these panels but it keeps

8:20

showing me that I'm getting less output

8:22

your instrument is wrong so we had a lot

8:26

of backwards and forwards and we got the

8:28

instrument here too in Florida to test

8:30

we recalibrated it we did everything the

8:33

client asked we sent it back out still

8:35

he was getting the same results and he

8:37

wasn't happy so what I did was I

8:39

traveled out to the site and I could see

8:42

straight away the problem was soiling so

8:44

you can see in the bottom left hand

8:45

corner I rubbed the panel and

8:48

immediately

8:50

he was admitting that it was to soiling

8:54

that was causing the problem but how do

8:56

I prove that to him okay how do I prove

8:59

it well I have a method to prove how

9:03

soiling is affecting output a little bit

9:05

later on in the presentation for now

9:08

just getting back to the location and

9:10

how we could understand how dust and

9:13

soiling gets worse over time there are

9:15

some resources available to us okay so

9:18

this article online at ScienceDirect

9:22

comm is a great article all about

9:25

soiling and here we have the cause of

9:27

dust accumulation now we're not going to

9:29

go through all of this but you can see

9:31

the environmental factors the dust type

9:34

the location and installation factors

9:36

okay and we can kind of determine what

9:39

is going to be affecting our plant and

9:41

as such we can maybe plan in a little

9:44

bit better what our maintenance and

9:46

cleaning schedule should be similarly we

9:50

can look at dust intensity around the

9:53

globe with this dust intensity map now

9:55

this is measuring the micron layer of

9:58

dust and it gives us an average for each

10:00

area so the darker the zone here on this

10:04

map the the worse the dust and the

10:10

soiling will be so here if we look at at

10:13

North Africa we can see that we have

10:16

force it's very dark ok so we've got we

10:19

got very high intensity of dust there

10:22

similarly in Argentina Chile we're in a

10:27

three parts of Mongolia

10:31

but we can also see areas that are quite

10:33

misleading because number two is the

10:36

United States and it said the dust

10:38

intensity is quite low but then we have

10:40

to localize that to maybe California

10:44

okay and then if we look at Greenland

10:46

Iceland these are going a very low for

10:49

dust but they will be high for snow

10:51

coverage okay so what I would like you

10:54

to do is when you're considering this in

10:55

your own M plans really consider where

10:58

you are and it shouldn't be uniform

11:00

across all your projects that's my kind

11:02

of

11:02

point here if you do a project in

11:04

California it's not going to be same as

11:06

a project in Minnesota so we need to

11:09

localize our maintenance schedules the

11:13

image here on the right this isn't one

11:15

of mine I picked this up from some one

11:18

of the community members on LinkedIn and

11:20

you can see just how severe the dust

11:22

layer can get in a zone for it really is

11:25

very pronounced and it's going to cause

11:28

us some very big problems moving forward

11:31

so the takeaway from this is okay

11:35

consider your location both on a global

11:38

scale

11:38

with regard to dust intensity but also

11:41

on a local scale with regard to what's

11:43

around you okay are you in a desert are

11:45

you in a temperate climate where are you

11:47

situated I in the world so I mentioned

11:52

that soiling does cause shading but it

11:56

doesn't just cause Shay ok soiling

11:58

causes us some other problems so take a

12:00

look at this you can see that the

12:06

soiling is causing a hot spot so we can

12:10

see this with any old thermal camera you

12:13

don't need a very expensive IR or

12:14

thermal imaging camera to to get this

12:16

sort of picture but a thin layer and

12:19

you've probably seen this as PV Free

12:21

Press

12:21

professionals has accumulated on the

12:25

bottom row of cells of the panels ok and

12:29

at first glance you may think well

12:31

that's probably not going to cause any

12:33

problems it's it's only a little bit of

12:35

the panel but what happens is the

12:38

current can't flow properly in the panel

12:41

and we get increased resistance which is

12:43

then dissipated as in thermal energies

12:47

as heat so that's essentially those

12:50

glowing yellow spots are is power loss

12:53

ok so we're not only losing it because

12:56

of shading but also because the soil is

12:58

causing hot spots now the shading is

13:01

lowering the amount of irradiance that

13:04

hits the panel and the hot spot is

13:06

bringing down the voltage because

13:09

voltage is directly affected by cell

13:12

temperature so it's a double whammy now

13:14

if this was

13:15

across an entire table can you imagine

13:19

if we had a very large hundred 200

13:22

megawatt plant even a small plant if we

13:24

multiply up that hot spot across the

13:26

whole field we're losing a heck of a lot

13:29

of generation now this could be caused

13:31

by rain hitting the ground splashing up

13:36

onto the panels it could be that there's

13:39

been vehicles driven down the middle of

13:41

the table which is splashing up and

13:43

covering the panel's it could be that we

13:45

had dirty rain whatever it may be we

13:47

need to find a way to overcome it so the

13:50

thing I noticed about this picture is

13:51

the panels are very low to the ground

13:54

okay so if we lifted the Bob I got some

13:56

clearance for the ground we wouldn't

13:58

have that splash up so maybe that's a

14:00

solution I'm looking at this second

14:03

picture so I mentioned soiling isn't

14:05

just dust and dirt right it's also bird

14:07

droppings leaves etc so you can see the

14:11

impact that this bird dropping has on

14:14

this panel this is one small bird

14:17

dropping okay and imagine that again

14:19

scaled up across one hundred to two

14:22

megawatts no matter what the size we

14:23

have to scale up this problem so you can

14:25

see that not only is dust intensities

14:29

snow whatever it may be causing shading

14:32

but also we're getting quite severe hot

14:35

spots on the plant so soiling causes

14:38

shading and hot spots which means power

14:41

loss which means money lost so soiling

14:44

equals lost money but again how do we

14:49

prove this to a layman how do we prove

14:52

this to the client okay I could show

14:55

them this picture and your old PV

14:57

professionals here and you can probably

15:00

see straight away well that that's not

15:01

good

15:02

but what does that actually mean to the

15:04

end-user to the homeowner mr. Smith miss

15:07

mrs. Smith how do we prove it to them

15:09

what we're going to cover that shortly

15:11

but first we need a solution to that

15:16

soiling problem okay so I'm going to go

15:19

on to how we prove it but first I want

15:22

to tell you what the solution is so

15:24

we're going to work a little bit

15:24

backwards the solution

15:28

is cleaning very simple if something's

15:32

dirty you should clean it so we have

15:35

many tools available there are a lot of

15:36

innovations in this sector there are

15:38

automatic robots that are doing cleaning

15:41

further - the feedback from the first

15:44

presentation I give this morning there

15:46

is also a vacuum units available so if

15:49

you're in the middle of the desert and

15:51

you can't get any water ok

15:55

then of course vacuuming off the dust

15:58

would be a better consideration also and

16:02

in California where I do a lot of work

16:04

there's loss there are a lot of areas

16:06

that have water shortages ok

16:09

so again that means that vacuuming or

16:12

another method might be a good solution

16:15

for you now I have prepared just a small

16:22

video of some cleaning happening in the

16:25

Middle East so when I try to do this

16:27

this morning the video didn't actually

16:29

work so I'm going to try again so

16:32

forgive me if I go off if the audio goes

16:34

off for a second please bear with me I

16:36

will be back with you in a second so I'm

16:39

going to try and get this video to run

16:41

here ok so hopefully this runs

16:58

I'm not sure this is working if the

17:04

video doesn't work I don't know if you

17:05

can see the the pictures here but

17:09

basically the we have a JCB big tractor

17:13

with a cleaning brush and what we found

17:16

was as the brush was sweeping across the

17:18

panel's the dust is just thrown up in

17:20

the air and that's really just moving

17:22

the problem to another part of the site

17:24

and when you have a 260 watt megawatt

17:28

plant to take care of and this is the

17:30

Mohammed Alban rock tomb solar farm in

17:33

Dubai then it's a real issue

17:37

I'm really sorry folks it looks like the

17:39

video again isn't working so we will

17:43

we'll have to give that one a Miss but I

17:45

will send out the link it's on our

17:47

YouTube channel so I do apologize for

17:50

that

17:56

ok so getting back to our presentation

18:00

and I really will have to get those

18:01

videos to start working so to get a

18:05

cleaning contract we first got to

18:07

convince people ok so how do we convince

18:10

people to to do that how do we convince

18:13

them to sign us up to doing some

18:16

cleaning well using our range of testing

18:21

tools what we can do is we can test

18:24

prior to your first cleaning session ok

18:27

clean the panel's thoroughly with the

18:29

appropriate method for the location and

18:32

then we can test when they're clean and

18:35

what that will do is that will give us

18:37

an exact an exact real direct result of

18:42

performance increase because we can take

18:44

voltage we can take short-circuit

18:46

current we could run an IV curve trace

18:48

and we can compare the two so you can

18:51

sure your clients directly the

18:54

difference there and then you don't have

18:55

to wait for a report for instance if

18:58

this was a residential project you could

19:01

invite mr. and mrs. Smith out and say

19:04

listen your panels are really dirty look

19:06

when I test them this is what I get but

19:09

if I was to clean them there

19:11

is what you can get so using a handheld

19:14

test tool like the c-word pv 210 or 200

19:18

we can prove that in real terms for the

19:22

client so what I prepared for us today

19:25

is actually a little case study around

19:27

this an example in the field if you will

19:34

so in order for us to convince the plant

19:37

owner to clean their modules and show

19:39

our expected values ok sorry we need to

19:43

show them our expected values versus our

19:46

measured values ok so what I'm saying is

19:50

here when I look at these solar panels

19:52

this is what they should be outputting

19:54

okay but this is what they're actually

19:57

outputting using my test device so we

20:01

could do that for string voltage so as a

20:03

quick example if we have a 40 volt panel

20:06

and we have 10 panels in series we

20:09

should see 400 volts okay not taking

20:12

into account the temperature coefficient

20:13

for string current at a thousand watts

20:16

per meter squared if we have 9 amps then

20:19

if 500 watts per meter squared

20:21

we should have 4.5 amps using the

20:24

irradiance factor so very quickly we can

20:26

tell just from voltage and short circuit

20:28

current what the output should be so

20:34

this is the case study and the example

20:37

of where I was ok so this is in Clovis

20:40

California in Fresno and standard test

20:45

conditions as you probably all know are

20:47

1,000 watts per meter squared 25 degrees

20:50

Celsius and the standard test conditions

20:52

value for these panels that we were

20:54

going to test was thirty seven point

20:56

four VDC and ISC was 9 amps ABC so

21:01

that's what we should have been seeing

21:02

because the average irradiance in that

21:04

area on that day was round about 900 900

21:09

to a thousand watts per meter squared ok

21:12

and you can notice in the top right hand

21:14

corner there is a good picture there of

21:17

when we went up on the roof there was

21:19

actually a ground fault on this system

21:20

as well which we managed

21:21

to detect with the c-word PV to Ted but

21:24

you can see that handprint on the panel

21:26

okay so that's how badly shaded by

21:30

soiling these panels were that you could

21:33

put your hand on and you could quite see

21:35

clearly see it was very blue underneath

21:38

now again I have another video here of

21:41

me actually performing the tests in the

21:44

field again it didn't work this morning

21:46

and the last video didn't work but we're

21:48

gonna try again yeah we're going to try

21:50

these things so if you bear with me one

21:51

second we'll see if we can make this

21:53

video available for you and no it looks

22:02

like I'm sorry it looks like that video

22:06

was also failure to launch so what we'll

22:10

do is we'll head into the values which

22:13

we extrapolated rather than the video so

22:16

using the the formula that we've we

22:20

talked about on the previous slide we

22:22

calculated that under this temperature

22:25

and this irradiance we should see 37.4

22:29

volts v OC and we should see 8.1 amps

22:34

short-circuit current that's what we

22:36

should have seen using the pv 202 tang

22:40

rather device which should give us

22:43

around about 336 Watts approximately

22:45

estimate so when we actually tested the

22:49

panel which you can see is incredibly

22:51

soiled we actually came out with 33

22:55

volts okay and we measured 5.6 for is C

23:00

so we've lost nearly 4 apps ok we've had

23:05

a 30 percent loss in current and all in

23:09

all that we kind of estimated that as

23:11

the client was looting losing 44 percent

23:15

of their generation okay so with the pv

23:20

150 or the pv 200 or 210 we can

23:22

demonstrate to the client how much

23:24

they're losing in real terms there and

23:27

then here you go you got this I cleaned

23:32

it test you've got this

23:35

you can show the client in real terms

23:37

using a very professional device what

23:40

their losses were so we will send to you

23:45

the videos which I've tried to get going

23:47

as I say the first one was the module

23:48

cleaning in the desert the second was

23:51

this image of me here is the video of

23:54

this doing the test and you can see it

23:57

in real-time for yourself but there is a

24:02

problem here what if we can't clean the

24:06

panel's what should we do so here is a

24:09

scenario for you you have a plant that

24:12

you need to Commission okay and the plan

24:15

has been installed for a couple of

24:16

months you were just waiting for a

24:17

connection and over those months the

24:19

dust and dirt is accumulated on the

24:22

panels all for instance you're going

24:24

back to a job site that you need to do a

24:28

performance verification on you may not

24:31

have access to clean those panels

24:34

machines are very expensive there could

24:37

be water shortages you may not have the

24:39

personnel they may not be the budget so

24:42

you might not be able to clean all of

24:44

the panels in the site so what can we do

24:46

to make sure that the results we get

24:49

using our see what instrument are

24:50

accurate like this gentleman I mentioned

24:53

earlier who had the problem and said

24:55

that his see what instrument working

24:57

correctly

24:59

he couldn't clean his plant so what we

25:02

have to do is work out what our soiling

25:05

factor is okay what offset from STC

25:10

values should we use okay for this plant

25:14

so what we do is we remove a single

25:17

panel we don't need all of them okay

25:19

we're going to extrapolate up and this

25:21

is a very soil panel and what I want to

25:23

do is measure that panel while it's

25:26

soiled okay and make sure it's in the

25:28

same inclination as the rest of the

25:30

array

25:31

sometimes Tofana on a tracker I

25:33

appreciate so we have then the results

25:36

we have the dirty results so clean off

25:39

that single panel okay and then measure

25:43

the clean panel okay and then using

25:46

those clean results in the dirt

25:47

for a single panel we can then figure

25:50

out what the percentage difference is

25:52

and we can use that as a soiling factor

25:54

for the entire plant okay

25:57

so I'm not saying get two data sets here

25:59

I mean maybe spend a day in half a day

26:02

testing a variety of panels across the

26:04

site using this method that we can

26:06

aggregate the results but if you can't

26:08

clean all of them at least clean one and

26:12

figure out what you're soiling factors

26:16

should be and how much you should offset

26:18

from V or C there are a couple of other

26:21

things we need to incorporate the IEC

26:25

standard recommends that we should

26:27

incorporate 0.5 percent natural

26:31

degradation for every year the system

26:33

has been installed lig sorting there are

26:36

a couple of other things but really

26:37

soiling I found in most cases is the

26:40

biggest drain from the from the system

26:45

so what can we use to test well I've

26:49

mentioned throughout the presentation

26:51

the c-word PB 210 so this will give us

26:53

voltage is see continuity of earth we

26:57

will get insulation resistance and also

26:59

a curve trace the PB 150 is really a

27:02

workhorse unit it'll do everything apart

27:04

from the the curve tracing and it's more

27:07

cost effective and then the sole utility

27:10

Pro is really our larger unit so it's at

27:14

1500 volts 40 amps okay so you can test

27:18

multiple strings in parallel with that

27:20

instrument and you can test 1500 volt

27:22

sites so with these units and these

27:25

instruments and the the backing of us

27:27

here at C wit you can prove to your

27:30

clients that there is an issue with

27:32

soiling on their plant so what I would

27:38

like to do now is I I'm quite active on

27:42

on LinkedIn I like talking with other

27:44

members of the solar community and I

27:46

asked them three questions and the first

27:48

question was do you factor cleaning into

27:51

your OEM schedule are your clients aware

27:55

of production loss due to soiling and do

27:58

you clean panels prior

28:00

to testing or do you add in that soiling

28:03

factor after the fact okay so these very

28:06

three three questions about how

28:08

operators are currently dealing with

28:11

with with soiling and you can see from

28:14

this image on the right hand side that

28:17

was the home that had forty three

28:19

percent reduction in power output due to

28:22

soiling

28:23

okay you can see how bad that looks so

28:28

first of all we had a comment from from

28:31

Brian and clean your solar clean your

28:33

solar or a great company based out in

28:36

California I believe who were doing

28:38

cleaning and an installation work he

28:42

says Michael production loss will vary

28:44

by region and other factors as we

28:47

discussed earlier here in Southern

28:48

California the soiling factor can be

28:50

higher in areas that are dry and dusty

28:53

not to mention other factors bird

28:55

droppings tree sap pollen etc the

28:58

problem that Brian saw in the O&M side

29:01

of the residential installations is that

29:04

he feels that window cleaners okay not

29:08

electricians but window cleaners

29:09

recommend that people get their solar

29:11

cleaned every three months brian says

29:14

that unless the soiling is that bad he

29:17

thinks that's overkill so again this is

29:19

what I mentioned earlier Brian is

29:21

confirming that we need to localize what

29:23

our O&M and cleaning schedule should be

29:25

he also goes on to talk about commercial

29:29

systems where PPA is very much a bigger

29:32

factor and so we need more

29:35

considerations and more cleaning we then

29:41

got some comments from John Nessler he's

29:43

the CEO of psi da they they work in the

29:47

solar and the wind and power storage

29:50

industry

29:51

his answer to the first question was he

29:53

always cleans the panel's prior to

29:55

testing which is good practice he

29:57

factors in the cleaning cost of onm and

29:59

rigid to try to reduce the frequency of

30:02

cleaning and he really talks about it

30:04

openly with his customers so I think

30:07

John there those are the three perfect

30:09

answers we should

30:10

do we should really give sorry to those

30:13

questions

30:14

be honest clean prior to testing and

30:17

factor in the cost of cleaning whenever

30:19

we can I also got a comment from a

30:24

friend of mine Aaron iron is the CEO of

30:26

bonds I saw that great company they do

30:29

drone inspections he also has some good

30:31

innovative products in the work it's

30:34

really he's had an underserved area of

30:36

the OEM space and where water

30:39

availability water availability isn't an

30:42

issue it really is a problem and he says

30:45

design really plaid design is where we

30:48

should be compensating for the soiling

30:50

remember in the beginning I suggested

30:52

that we raise the table rather than have

30:55

water splash onto the panels so it's a

30:59

great great comment there by Aaron and

31:01

you can of course get drone inspections

31:05

in the RGB spectrum to point out

31:08

specific areas of shady and then you

31:10

could send someone directly to that

31:11

point with the instrument Haley the

31:17

managing director of solar panel

31:19

cleaning services is actually based in

31:21

the United Kingdom and he comes across

31:24

this a lot now the main point here that

31:27

Haley raised is that panels are left for

31:31

long periods of time without cleaning

31:34

occurring and what happens is the

31:36

modules become permanently stained okay

31:40

so if you're leaving the the soiling on

31:43

the panels for a long period of time it

31:46

could actually affect your warranty

31:47

because you haven't taken care of them

31:49

and for larger commercial systems he

31:51

says we should definitely put it into

31:54

our cleaning costs and also the

31:56

equipment hire forgetting to those sites

31:58

not just the labor cost etc so um today

32:04

we've covered what soiling is how to

32:07

think about how it affects us in our

32:10

particular area and where we're

32:12

installing we then looked at our

32:14

expected and our measured values and

32:17

what they can show us in terms of

32:19

generation loss we then looked at a case

32:22

study Eric

32:23

California which was very dusty I also

32:26

tried to show you a couple of videos

32:27

which didn't work but never mind

32:29

and I also introduced you to the C word

32:32

range of test tools which is available

32:34

globally in the United States in Europe

32:36

in Asia Africa Australasia really

32:40

everywhere Southern America everywhere

32:43

our units are available so I'd like to

32:46

open up the floor now to any questions

32:48

you may have if you don't have any

32:51

questions that's absolutely fine as well

32:53

you can contact me at Michael M at C

32:59

would calm that's Michael M at C would

33:02

calm please do get in touch with any

33:05

questions I'm more than happy to to take

33:07

follow-up questions you can also link up

33:10

with me on LinkedIn if that's somewhere

33:12

that you're active I post up interesting

33:15

so things there are presentations on

33:18

their past webinars you can access and

33:20

also you can ask questions and get

33:22

involved in the discussion because quite

33:24

often we will have nice group talks

33:27

going from from a post I asked for

33:31

comments and questions to be asked so

33:34

does it look like any questions are

33:37

coming through right now which is a

33:39

little bit different to this morning

33:42

which we had we had a lot of questions

33:45

coming through so it just leaves me to

33:47

thank those people that joined today

33:50

thank you

33:51

Claudio Thank You densa how you doing

33:54

there mate I hope you do well thank you

33:56

dr. Robinson Elizabeth the Erik George

34:00

Jonathan Joshua Keaton Christopher

34:04

marina Michael Sinjin Simon sauna and

34:09

and everyone else that is joined oh we

34:11

do have a couple of questions here how

34:14

to calculate sewing losses before the

34:16

installation of the rooftop projects

34:18

various installations okay keep them

34:23

that's a very good question really we

34:26

can't okay we can take a best guess so

34:29

what I would suggest is take an

34:32

aggregate of the all of the

34:33

installations in the similar area of

34:35

so maybe we could have a data-based of

34:37

soiling okay or maybe we could install

34:40

the system and then monitor it for the

34:42

client for a couple of months so that's

34:44

something you could put in the package

34:45

in your proposal you know one of the

34:47

lines could be this price includes

34:50

soiling protection for three months and

34:54

where you'll go and monitor their system

34:56

frequently to see how much it effects

34:59

but it is really quite difficult but you

35:02

can get a larger view of it by saying

35:05

okay I'm in the middle of the desert I'm

35:06

gonna have a lot of soiling or okay I'm

35:09

in the build-up residential area there's

35:12

concrete everywhere there's not going to

35:14

be as much dust so so you can kind of

35:16

get a feel for where where sonic should

35:17

be thank you denser for your for your

35:20

cracker for your for your thanks and

35:22

comments I think I don't see any more

35:27

questions coming through so I'd like to

35:30

thank everyone for your attendance today

35:33

the slides will be sent out and

35:35

eventually we're going to get a

35:37

recording on YouTube as well so if you

35:40

have any questions contact me Michael M

35:43

at sea would calm that's Michael m at

35:46

sea would calm and do be aware we have

35:49

distributors everywhere these are

35:51

available worldwide so I can put you in

35:53

touch with your local distributor or

35:55

indeed if you're in the United States

35:56

you could come to us here we include

35:59

online training with every purchase so

36:01

we can tell you how to use it when to

36:03

use it what to use it for we cover IV

36:06

curve tracing so on M techniques we do

36:08

cover a lot with our free training

36:10

that's included with the instrument so

36:13

again no questions there so thank you

36:16

very much for your time this afternoon I

36:18

hope you have a great weekend wherever

36:20

you are and see you again on the next

36:22

one thank you
