Ep. 28 The Effects of Cranking the Snare Side Head

0:00

hey guys welcome back to sounds like a

0:01

drum and welcome to part 2 of our what

0:05

are snare side heads really doing to us

0:07

video in the previous one we talked

0:10

about going through a lot of pitches on

0:11

the snare side and what it does to the

0:14

sound of the drum without adjusting the

0:15

batter at all and now we're going to do

0:17

the opposite we left this bottom head

0:19

cranked and now we're going to see what

0:24

we can do with the batter head win it's

0:26

tabletop tight like this so for starters

0:38

this snare side head is it's too

0:41

extremely high

0:42

we chose a brand new head for this drum

0:44

just to make sure that the sound is as

0:45

pure as possible and not being

0:47

influenced by the head having been

0:48

played a lot and kind of stretched out

0:50

and stuff so now there were way up here

0:52

in the stratosphere why would we do this

0:56

well I think that most people tune the

0:58

snare side head very high and again this

1:00

is just my opinion and things people

1:01

have said to me I think they tune it

1:02

high because they're looking for

1:04

articulation and clarity and also

1:06

probably because someone told them that

1:08

that's what you do with the snare side

1:09

head and that is totally fair I have

1:12

done super-high tuning on snare side for

1:15

long stretches of my life when it was

1:17

getting me a sound that made me happy

1:18

and now especially doing more you know

1:22

studio situations and things that are a

1:24

little bit clinical it's good to explore

1:27

the options which is what we did in the

1:29

previous video now here we have the same

1:32

heads same drum and the batter head is

1:36

basically where it was at the end of the

1:38

last video and we're going to check out

1:41

this sound and then try to analyze

1:44

what's good about it and then go way

1:48

down from here and also go way up from

1:50

here the main thing that I noticed when

1:52

we cranked up a snare side head to where

1:54

it's basically choking out and I'm

1:56

making a pitch anymore or really

1:57

resonating much anymore is that there's

2:00

a certain loss of clarity toward the

2:02

edge of the head the center is

2:04

articulate and the edge gets a little

2:06

bit messy sounding when you play

2:08

articulate ideas kind of right

2:11

the edge and this is kind of a cool

2:14

thing if you want to do a lot of rolls

2:15

if you're doing maybe some like New

2:17

Orleans stuff and you want to have messy

2:18

rolls and then clarity and your backbeat

2:20

that's cool

2:22

if you want to have even response over

2:24

the whole head you have to make some

2:26

adjustments to make that happen which is

2:28

why I don't tend to tune that head this

2:29

high now the batter head right now is in

2:33

a medium-high range as it was before so

2:35

we'll give it a little listen with the

2:37

snares off and then give it a little

2:38

listen with snares on I hear some janky

3:04

stuff going on in the drum I hear the

3:06

wires moving around extra there's some

3:08

kind of funny overtones coming from them

3:10

those little sort of transients are

3:13

things that I associate with a snare

3:15

side head being tuned extremely high

3:17

because it's now vibrating at a very

3:20

high very small frequency and causing

3:23

those wires to do some kind of crazy

3:25

stuff and interact with each other in

3:26

weird ways if I was in a situation where

3:28

I had to use this tension for some

3:32

reason then I would probably go for a

3:35

higher tuning on the batter side to try

3:37

to match this sort of choked thing and

3:39

just sort of like steer into the skid a

3:40

little bit with it so this drum is tuned

3:43

high but I'm gonna go higher first and

3:46

see if we can get something that's a

3:48

little clearer and a little more inline

3:50

with the idea of a very high tuned snare

3:52

drum

3:53

[Music]

3:59

okay this is kind of extreme we had to

4:02

go higher than I thought to kind of get

4:05

out of that range of those ugly

4:06

interactions with the wires so batter

4:10

heads really not making a note anymore

4:12

it's pretty dead but this is also kind

4:14

of a cool sound it gives me sort of a

4:16

hip-hop idea or like a funk got a vibe

4:18

and even with a little muffling it could

4:20

be cool too so we'll do the same thing

4:23

listen with the wires off and we'll turn

4:24

them on to check it out as a sort of

4:46

important aside here it didn't change

4:48

the tension on the wires which I think a

4:51

lot of times when there's sloppy sound

4:52

and the wires that's the first place

4:54

that a player will go to try to get rid

4:55

of that racket

4:56

and end up just choking the drum even

4:59

more to try to get some of that design

5:01

and strange stuff to go away there's

5:04

still a little bit of funny business

5:06

going on the wires but it's a lot more

5:07

controlled right now I've also seen

5:09

people like tape the wires to the drum

5:11

and some other kind of stuff like that

5:12

to get them to not rattle around like

5:14

that it really is the tuning of the

5:17

snare side head that makes that stuff

5:18

happen and if you check out that

5:20

previous video you can hear it kind of

5:22

start to happen as we get it tighter and

5:23

tighter and tighter it goes away from

5:25

that thing of wolf and then the sound is

5:28

over to having some kind of strange

5:29

After Effects so yeah this sounds like a

5:32

gunshot and it's really loud in here and

5:35

it's cool and it sounds good

5:38

I for this sound I probably still

5:40

wouldn't tune the snare side this high

5:42

because the drum itself feels hard now

5:44

and it feels kind of choked out and even

5:47

in orchestral situations not so much

5:49

that I was doing them but I got to check

5:51

out someone's orchestral drum that they

5:53

were using at an extremely high tension

5:54

they still weren't really jacking up the

5:57

snare side head that much they tuned it

5:59

up for sure but they still want to be

6:02

able to play into the drum same as us

6:04

and so no matter what music you're doing

6:07

making sure that at the very least the

6:09

snare side head still has some give and

6:12

a little bit of tone in it is going to

6:14

improve the sound so now let's go the

6:16

other way I went up to get this about

6:20

almost half a turn like between a

6:22

quarter and a half a turn so I'm gonna

6:24

go down a ways and try and see if I can

6:28

get this to do kind of a fatback thing

6:30

which is gonna lead us into what I think

6:33

is the most important part of this

6:34

particular experiment that we're doing

6:36

[Music]

6:43

okay so the the reason that I'm excited

6:46

about this portion of the video is

6:48

because something that I have had

6:52

conversations about a lot with drummers

6:54

about the sound of the snare drum is

6:55

that they feel like the drum is making

6:57

too many overtones or too much tone

7:00

overall and they're getting a lot of

7:02

note and a lot of noise and a lot of

7:04

sustain out of the drum but it's not a

7:06

drum II sound it's like a pitchy kind of

7:08

sound that overwhelms everything and

7:10

then also the drum feels weirdly choked

7:13

when you just hit it in the middle and

7:15

you end up with a scenario where no

7:17

dynamic sounds good

7:18

the rimshot sound crazy if your strike

7:21

zone is larger than maybe an inch then

7:24

all your back beats sound different and

7:26

you can even have it clash with the

7:29

tonality of a track if you're not

7:31

muffling it so then the next step is

7:33

let's put a ton of tape and moon gels on

7:35

there and then it's still choked and now

7:37

it's dead and the wires are also not

7:41

having a good time interacting with the

7:42

snare side head and they're creating

7:44

strange overtones and so ugly stuff so

7:47

where we're at now is the tabletop tight

7:49

it's narrow side and we've lowered the

7:51

batter down a lot but it's not a pitch

7:55

that I wouldn't play the drum at it's

7:57

just gonna sound ridiculous with the

7:59

snare side head tuned like this

8:03

[Music]

8:10

[Music]

8:24

[Music]

8:31

what we have here is too much promotion

8:34

of residents from the snare side head

8:36

it's causing extreme activation of the

8:40

batter head and the snare side head is

8:43

choked so we can't get it to move and

8:45

interact with the snare head at this

8:47

pitch and that means that what you're

8:49

ending up with is almost no fundamental

8:52

and a boatload of overtones you might be

8:53

able to hear them from my talking in the

8:56

mic I mean they're loud to me right here

8:58

because the bottom head is like trying

9:01

to make them come out and as much as

9:04

this is a broad sound it's not really a

9:06

nice punchy sound it's got a lot of

9:08

overtones and it feels like an effect to

9:10

me it almost sounds like compression

9:12

like this like this sound is compressed

9:14

and if you just take the snare side down

9:20

like a quarter turn from where it is

9:22

right now it'll completely change the

9:24

character of this kind of sound and it

9:27

will also make the drum clean

9:30

inarticulate from one side to the other

9:33

and in the middle so I guess the last

9:35

thing to do is just lower the snare side

9:38

a little bit and see if it does what we

9:40

think it's going to do

9:42

I just really quickly lowered the pitch

9:46

of the snare side head between a quarter

9:48

and a half a turn which is a significant

9:50

amount for a snare side head because of

9:52

the material that it's made out of and

9:54

already this sounds completely different

9:57

than just a minute ago didn't change the

9:59

batter head at all it's still kind of a

10:25

wild sound because we are tuned down on

10:27

the batter head and I don't have the

10:29

wire super tight but the feel of it to

10:33

the stick in the rimshot in the center

10:35

everywhere is a huge improvement and

10:38

that was just lowering the snare side

10:41

head between a quarter and a half of a

10:43

turn and these are the kind of Manute

10:45

adjustments that actually make huge

10:47

difference and if you know what kind of

10:49

sound you're looking for you can make

10:50

these tiny adjustments and get closer to

10:52

it so just as a final aside for this if

10:55

I was sitting down at this drum and I

10:57

wanted to have it do sort of a

10:59

middle-of-the-road thing that's gonna

11:00

work on a lot of stuff at this point I

11:03

would probably lower the snare side head

11:05

a little bit more and I would probably

11:08

raise the batter head a little bit more

11:09

because right now it's on the low side

11:11

it's got a big wide sound it's ringing

11:13

for kind of a while and that's again is

11:16

cool it's kind of an effect rather than

11:18

like as a run-of-the-mill snare sound so

11:21

as a last thing I'm gonna nudge the

11:24

snare side down just a little bit and

11:25

I'm gonna raise the batter head a

11:27

quarter turn and I suspect that that's

11:29

going to end up with a sort of thing

11:30

that I would want out of this particular

11:32

kind of drum

11:34

[Music]

11:39

alright it did what I thought I was

11:42

gonna do slight nudge down on the bottom

11:43

and a quarter turn up and there were a

11:46

couple of lugs that I know just a little

11:47

bit to even out the pitches because

11:49

anytime you change the bottom it's gonna

11:50

mess with the top a little bit because

11:52

they're talking to each other and here's

11:54

the final sign for the Supra today yeah

12:21

it's good it's just a knee it's it's got

12:24

a lot of tone in it but it's not too

12:25

much overtone the fundamentals pretty

12:27

strong with some slight adjustments to

12:30

the snare side head we could dial in

12:32

more articulation or more length of tone

12:35

in the wires which we're gonna address

12:37

in a future video I have some schemes

12:38

for that to kind of figure out how to

12:41

get more articulation or more fatness

12:43

out of the drum with different choices

12:45

down there but yeah sounds great and as

12:49

usual please like subscribe comment let

12:52

us know if you have any thoughts about

12:53

this if you have any ideas or questions

12:56

and talk to you soon
