Hello everyone, I'm Terry. Today I want to talk about something that has nothing to do with investment or work. It's actually the video I uploaded a few days ago where I unboxed my apartment in Tokyo. I shared my small apartment with you guys. It's very small. I don't like to decorate my apartment like many people do. I bought some nice furniture, some tableware, and some amazing chairs. There's nothing in this apartment. The whole room is very basic.
After that video came out, many people left comments saying that I was stingy, and some said I was living a miserable life. They also said that I was trying to improve my life by making a lot of money. They asked if I was really that poor. They also said that I was so rich, why didn't I make myself a better place to live? They said that I didn't seem to be a person who loves life. They also said that life is so simple, like no friends and no girlfriend. They also asked me what I was doing to make money. Was it to see the happiness of numbers on the account?
Next, "Aren't you rich? How do you live in this house?" I really don't know when I said I was rich, but netizens often fantasize about it. So this message is normal. In fact, seeing these messages and comments, I think it's normal. Because everyone's values are different. Everyone's needs are different. But what I want to say is that I'm not like what you think. I'm not happy. Or I don't love life. I think it's the netizens who left these messages that are really unhappy.
And I know that many people are really unhappy. And many people are just happy on the surface. Especially now, the self-media, Douyin, and AI make the rhythm of the whole world very fast. So it's easy for everyone to have a lot of FOMO and these rebellious emotions. So today I want to share three with you. Three ways that have always made me really happy. I hope that through these ways of thinking, you can reflect on it. Let you know why you may not be really happy.
Alright, so first of all, I want to reply to a comment from one of my friends. I live in a small place, and I seem to be living a very cramped life. What I want to say is that I've always known that the more you have, especially things that are physical, the less you will be happy. I know this sounds like it's not very reasonable, because everyone wants to live in a big house, want to drive a luxury car, want to buy a luxury bag, want to use the best things. But you can think back to the past, the happiness these things bring you,
actually stays in the moment you buy these things and then you just swipe the card. The source of that excitement and satisfaction is because you may not have it before. And now this feeling of melancholy is being satisfied. So you will feel very good. But in fact, after a day or two, you should know that it is normal to reply. Even you will be even more unhappy because you already have this level of melancholy.
There will always be more expensive and more expensive things in the world. And when you find that you can't get it, and then you go to meet that higher level of desire, you will start to become unhappy. And you will no longer feel the happiness of any other better than this lower level of good things. Let's take the simplest example. I was still a student at that time. I didn't have much money at that time. I can't meet any desire at any time.
I should say that the conditions at that time did not allow me to have any complaints. Because I basically had to pay for all the money I made during my internship. But in such an environment, under such conditions, I had a very happy life. Because I had a very fulfilling life. And I also really treasure any small things that happened in my life. I still remember the first time I succeeded in interning at a software company, I bought my first MacBook Pro in my life.
I really treasured this laptop at that time. I remember I bought protective case and other random accessories. I was very careful when I took it. I was afraid that I would scratch it. I think it's really hard to replicate the happiness I had at that time. Because I can have any kind of depression now. So I know if I become a person with a lot of depression today, I will live very unhappy. Because I know I'm the kind of person who wants to get something today. I will definitely spend more than usual. I have to work three times harder to get it.
So in this case, I will keep pursuing things that I can't get. Instead of cherishing what I already have. That's because I have very little sleep now. So I can live happily. I actually cherish everything that happens in my life. For example, a very simple trip. Or I can have a cup of coffee with my friends and chat for an afternoon. Even a cup of hot coffee will make me very happy. Because I won't put my attention on what I lack.
But they don't know which roads are available. If I want to make money, what else can I complain about? It's really the golden handcuffs. Most people who are unhappy with their work are not because of their work or lack of life. It's not like Eric said, "The most expensive part of life is the work." What's the reason for the gold handcuffs? Most people are not pursuing work.
The reason why I was really unhappy was because of the mentality of comparison. If you've really lived in the valley, you should have a lot of feelings. The people there, especially Chinese, like us, were all students in the early days. At that time, everyone started to compare whether you were from Stanford or Berkeley. If you were from UCLA, you would just be removed. After graduation, I started to compare the famous brands I've been to. What's X Google, X Meta, X Apple.
And then we often talk about how much your TC is. Then who suddenly rebelled again? Who's husband joined Nvidia a few years ago and now bought several houses? And then it feels like more than 500,000 a year, it's just a step out of the poor class. When you have a family, everyone starts to compare the house ZIP code. Who lives in 94027 and who bought a good house in 94022?
After having kids, they would start comparing who goes to which private school, how much is the tuition fee, how many points did SAT get, and whether they can go to Stanford to repeat their parents' lives. This is what people often talk about in the Bay Area. I saw an article on Thread that day.
He said he was very unhappy when he was working in the district Because of the serious peer pressure Especially in the Taiwanese community The pressure was so big that he didn't want to go to social media Then I felt selfish When we had a party, everyone would only talk about which tag to work on Did you get promoted? How many articles did you post? What kind of funding and position did you get? Then every time I heard it, I felt that life was so boring I'm so useless
Although these achievements can be exchanged for money But I was really anxious here And every time I respond I feel like I'm just afraid of being looked down on or criticized I feel like my energy is being drained I believe this is also a new voice of many Chinese in the valley In fact, it's really quite pitiful
Because in such an environment, it is really easy to get depression. This is why I guess, I guess, many of those who are very successful or very rich, why do they still get depression? I think part of the reason may be because of this comparison mentality. And just always feel that they are not good enough. Compared to others, they are always the anxiety and oppression of the other party.
Yes, that's right. The Chinese in the Wanchu area should be one of the highest income groups in the world. But I know that they are definitely not the happiest people. Because you are always admiring your neighbors. Recently, who made millions because of the company's IPO? And who made dozens of times because of O-In Crypto? And these things are also infinitely magnified in the current social media.
Basically, what you see on the internet is that everyone is pretending to be a billionaire. This is why everyone on Thread is so obsessed. But after those people have finished their speech, they go back to reality. They still have to get up early the next day and go to work to play cards. Because their vanity can't be realized in real life. The only place where they can pretend to be strong or strong is on the internet. Because on the internet, you can keep bragging about it. No one knows if it's true or not.
But in the end, it's still very poor. You are only satisfied with a false sense of superiority. Doing this not only makes you not have any progress, nor will it make you have any real happiness for a long time, but it will create a bunch of meaningless anxiety, making those who see it more painful.
This is the real reason why people who work hard are unhappy. It's not because work is meaningless, or because of the golden handcuffs. It's because you always live in other people's eyes. Always being pushed to chase that next higher level. Okay, then the third one, I would suggest that if you want to be happy, if you really want to be happy for a long time, it's actually very simple. You just have to be good to others.
Be kind to people. This is also a counter-intuitive concept. You might think, why do I feel happy when I'm good to others? It should be because I'm happy when I'm accepted by the one who is good to me, right? From a physical perspective, the dopamine and blood sugar in the brain are not secreted because of the "getting" part. It's mostly because of "giving". You empower others, and see that others become better because of you.
This is the way to make you feel happy for a long time. This is also why I didn't choose to stay in the US. In fact, for me, continuing to stay in the US is a very simple way. I can put all my time into software development and AI, or climb up the management level of this big company. I will definitely make more money than I do now. But I found out later that this is not the life I want.
I think the reason I'm here today to share these things with you is a given. It's more meaningful than making money in a tech factory. Whether it's because of those who have been through the unemployment crisis and the financial crisis, or because of those who invested in Bitcoin, Pantier, Tesla, and now have a good revenge.
I received so many thanks for my videos everyday. It's the motivation that I want to share with you guys. It's the motivation that I want to empower more people. That's why I decided to join this event with Hank. We hope to empower more people with our own experiences. We chose a very difficult way to do this. We had to endure the harsh words on the internet. Have you seen any online courses that are adjusted and updated according to your learning situation?
We basically do these things every day Because I think it's very important No one is doing it, then someone has to do it Okay, I hope this video has helped you today It can help you think about why you are not happy Or not as happy as you imagine First of all, the pursuit of material is absolutely endless
Next, through fake things, you can only bring you short-lived happiness. If you can not compare, but focus on what you already have, you will be more satisfied and happier. The last point is to be good to others. Many people wrote in my videos that I look like a stingy person, so I must be very stingy to my friends. I know I may not be very helpful when I say these words, but you can ask Hank, you can ask any friend who has worked with me,
Of course I can't call myself a charity, but I think I'm really generous. About the fact that I'm not good to myself, I spend most of my money on experiences. For me, experiences are the moments that I can remember forever. It's not about what big house I've lived in, or about how I dress up. It's like I'm living a good life on the surface.
If you think this video is helpful, please give me a thumbs up. If you want to support my channel, you can also check out IB's silver coin. They are my long-term partners and the only stockbrokers I use. I will put the link in the description box. See you next time.
