These Pigs Are Leaving the Farm
What?
Are you ready to the
do the deed?
Yes. We got plenty of pigs and I think
it'll go quick. If I could do this EVERY
DAY,
OH BOY, WOULD I BE SOMETHING. But then I
realized I already am something. God
doesn't make junk. I don't know
what you're up to, but probably nothing
good.

>> Good morning, folks. It is bright and
early this morning. Well, it's not too
bright and it's not too early. It's
around 6:30 this morning. We got five
loads of overstocks going out up at my
site, site three. I'm I'm assuming
there's going to be three trucks and so
we'll do three loads and then two of the
trucks will come back and we'll load
them again and that'll be our five
loads. It is
like 11° outside, but it actually feels
like -15 and the wind is blowing about
12 to 13 mph. It rained yesterday and
then I think it froze. So, hopefully no
trucks get stuck on the driveway or
trying to go up the hill or whatever.
Luckily, dad has the tow strap ready to
go with the tractor just in case, but uh
it could get dicey here with the
weather. Uh it definitely could get
dicey. I don't know how well the pigs
are going to move and I don't know how
well the trucks are going to be able to
navigate up the hill and in the driveway
with everything being so
being [clears throat] so icy. So, uh
we'll just have to see. It might be an
interesting morning this morning, but
without any further ado, let's get up
there and start loading.
Well, looks like we have no trouble at
all. I don't think we're going to have
any trouble with any trucks getting
stuck. So, we're in good shape. All
three trucks are already up here ready
to go. So, that's always nice. I tell
you what though, it is freaking [snorts]
cold out this morning. Not as Not as
much ice as I thought there was going to
be. I thought we were screwed for sure,
but actually the roads are pretty good
and there really isn't much ice. So,
that's great. But that wind with that
cold temperature, it does feel like it's
-15° out. I'll just tell you that. So,
we'll see how good the pigs move. Feel
like they're going to walk out of the
barn and they're going to get into the
chute. They're going to feel that cold
wind and they're not going to want to
move very good, but fingers crossed that
I'm that I'm wrong. Hopefully hopefully
they'll move just fine. What?
>> [laughter]
>> Are you ready to the
do the deed?
Yes.
I am. Better than 2:00 a.m. It's not
icy.
No, it dried. Thank the good Lord it
dried cuz I thought we were going to
have trucks stuck everywhere after that
rain, but it stopped raining and the
wind started blowing and blew all the
water off and
now it's just freaking cold, so but
that's all right. We'll get them. It's
cold. The only thing I'm worried about
now is how well pigs will move.
At least the wind's out of the west and
north and not out of the south or the
east cuz that makes a difference. We're
loading to the south, so it'll be a
little bit of a shock to them, but
they've got them bedded and all their
plugs in their trailer, so
shouldn't be too bad. Okay, so we're
going to take pigs out of both the north
room and the south room. So, in the
south room we're going to take this
north half,
north side, all these pigs and in the in
the north room we're also going to take
the north side.
But
since we have two empty pens that were
for the runt pens, we'll probably have
to take a few off the south side in the
north room as well. So, we'll just see
how we end up, but we got plenty of pigs
and I think it'll go quick. We're not
going to run pigs down the traditional
alley like we if you've ever watched. We
always run them down the backs of the of
the
we like to call it the fast alley. We
open up these rear swing gates and the
pigs move really well. So, we're going
to give it a whirl and uh
hopefully we can knock it out. I don't
know
what you're up to, but probably nothing
good. It's like Festivus. It's the
airing of grievances and I've got a long
list of grievances. Not really.
Well, can you get that rod in there?
It's not looking like it's lining up
very well. That's why you need a little
what my dad called subtle manipulation.
Look at that. Trisha uses that on me
sometimes
if she doesn't get her way.
Like a champ.

>> All right, first truck down. Second
truck's going to back up now.
It's starting to snow a little bit. It's
starting to feel like winter here in
southeast Iowa. We had a pretty
lackluster December. I feel like January
is always the worst month when it comes
to winter. Just is a sneaky winter month
where feel like you get the worst snow
in January. So, we'll see how we end up,
but first load went pretty good. The
wind's still blowing pretty decently, so
the pigs definitely hold up a little
bit, but hey, we're getting it done and
that's that's the most important thing.
So, glad to have it done.
One down, four more to go. How are you
doing?
I'M JUST GETTING WARMED UP.
If I could do this every day,
OH BOY, WOULD I BE SOMETHING. But then I
realized I already am something. God
doesn't make junk.
I think that's what he tells himself in
the mirror before he gets up. You just
got to tell yourself in the mirror those
words of affirmation really do help.
They help you they get you prepared to
load some pigs. So,
that's the energy Torque's giving off
this morning. I could tell you it's a
lot more humid in the building than in
the loading chute. So, I think he's
sweating and I'm just trying to keep
warm.
Well,
fourth load down.
One more to go.
So,
four trucks showed up. I was wrong. I
thought only three were going to show up
and then two of them were going to be
turnarounds, but four trucks showed up.
Only one truck is going to be a
turnaround load, so they're going to
come back and load us another time and
that was the first guy that was here.
So, he's on his way back now, but we're
slowly but surely getting this
north side of the south room all the way
empty. The north side in the north room
is all the way empty, so just working
down the south room. We should have it
knocked out here
pretty quick. So, uh it's 10:00 10:00.
He said he'll be here around 10:15. We
should be done before 11:00 or right
around 11:00 and then we'll probably go
get something to eat. So, yeah. Oh,
it's hard being Torque.
It is hard being Torque. For every step
you take, I have to take two. So, just
think of that. You just can't let the
old man in. You got to keep him out.
I don't know. How old am I? 54? 54. 54.
He wouldn't guess a 54. Well, you know
what? We need to get back in the habit
of loading loading more fat hogs.
Cuz if we are loading fat hogs hot
heavy, this would feel like cake. But we
don't load all of them anymore cuz we're
soft. Then when you have to do this, it
feels like work. But hey, just imagine
look loading these out of a barn lot.
No bueno. No bueno.
>> [music]
>> Come on.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Well, that's one pot of 60. Got to do
another one. So we're doing
We're doing 60, 60, 50, and then six
compartments of 70.
We're doing about 520 or so pigs a
truck.
Come on.
Hey, hey, hey, HEY, HEY, HEY.
THEY'RE MAKING A CHALLENGE RIGHT HERE.
THEY really do.
Cuz that group never goes all the way up
to the door. Therefore, you can't get
any more pigs in there. So you got to
just stand there like this and hope that
nobody tries to get through there and
get through there and get through there
and get through there. So
just like that.
So I just typically wait. I wait for Dad
because
there's no way I'm going to be able to
fit all these pigs in there. So
kind of the necessary evil. Okay, come
on.
Hey.
Do you want to take half? Do you want me
to start bringing 30? Uh we'll do the
50.
Okay. We'll do the 50 and then after
that we'll do 50. All right, bud.
Okay.
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come
on. COME ON.
GUYS, MAKE IT HARD ON yourselves if you
go out the gate. That would make things
a lot easier.
Come on.
There you go.
This way.
Let me do this.
Uh it doesn't matter.
Got one behind you.
Thank you.
Have a great day.
The best job or the best part of that
job is that it's done.
If I thought it would help to cry, I
would cry, but it won't help. So
I'm just going to go home and eat some
bacon
and know in my heart
that I won.
That's my daily affirmation.
Well, we might be running in a little
bit of a predicament here. Torque's
truck might not start. The battery in my
truck's about shot. So I don't know if
my truck's going to start. But I do know
that this truck's already running and
it's going to be off like a herd of
turtles here in a second.
You get it? You get it going?
There it goes.
I'd rate the truckers give them an A+
today. They did a good job for us. They
did do a good job. They did a good job.
Nobody got stuck.
Good deal.
That is the best part is we didn't have
to go pull anybody out.
Well,
somehow we made it. Are you a lot
happier now? Do you got more energy?
I'm feeling better by the spoonful, by
the forkful.
A little quality maple sausage. [snorts]
No bacon, but sausage today. We didn't
have bacon thawed out, but we had maple
sausage. So you ended up winning. I
still won.
Every day I wake up
it's a winner.
