Stream Giant Almost SNAPPED My Rod In Half! Epic Multi Species Challenge! Lures Only!
Hello guys, and welcome back to the
channel. As you can see, I've got the
waders on. I'm stood in the middle of an
absolutely beautiful, crystal clear
river. Now, this river is probably half
the size of the river I was fishing for
barbel in in my last video. But, what am
I after today? Well, I'm actually lure
fishing with an incredibly light lure
fishing setup. 0.2
to 0.8 g. Absolutely nothing. And that
is because [music] I'm doing another
multi-species lure fishing challenge. I
did one recently on the canal. It went
really, really well. We're going super
today on this little river to try and
catch as many species as we can do in
about 6 hours on artificial lures only.
I'm not 100% [music]
sure on the species that are in here,
but I have caught chub from here before.
I've caught perch from here before. And
I've even caught, I think, one rogue
trout here before, as well. So, fingers
crossed I get a few species today.
[music] You never know what we're going
to get. Let's go.
>> [music]
>> Now, I am really eager to start fishing
today. So, I'm going to very quickly run
you through my setup. As I mentioned,
0.2 to 0.8 g XUL rod. Super, super
sensitive. Got to be careful because I
am terrible with tackle and breaking it.
That is an incredibly sensitive rod tip.
And that is because I'm chucking
absolutely microscopic baits. And I'll
show you exactly, probably the main bait
I'll be using today. If you can see it,
cuz it's so small. It's a tiny, weeny,
little, um, trimmed down bloodworm. I've
got some bloodworm imitation baits. I've
got some little wormy style imitation
baits. Some little tiny mini shads. And
I'll be using them on tiny little hooks
like this. With, of course, tungsten
putty molded around the eye of the hook
to give it some weight. And with that, I
can catch absolutely any species of fish
that lives inside this stream. Whether
they're predatory or non-predatory. Now,
the lines are super, super light.
Obviously, we have to be able to cast
these baits out. So, we have the super
fine, super sensitive rod for helping to
flick these baits out long distances.
Also really light line, so just 4-lb
braid loaded onto this reel.
Ultra light, super thin braid, and then
the leader is just 2-lb. It's a 2-lb
fluorocarbon leader, and that thing
paired up with this setup should be
enough for me to land big chub to little
tiny baby fish like little minnows and
gudgeon and things like that we might be
able to find in here. [music] Right,
let's get cracked on because I really
want to catch some fish and I want to
see how many species of fish I can catch
>> [music]
>> in the next 5 or 6 hours.
>> [music]
>> Woah!
Oh, it looks like a big yeah. Oh, that's
a chub.
It's got to be a big chub.
On the XUL.
That was on a tiny little bait. This
bait is honestly
a tiny little bloodworm imitation.
That's a good size chub.
One of the species we need to tick off
and on a 0.2 g rod.
Oh my god, that feels good.
Oh, please don't come off.
It's a snap grand but he thankfully
didn't come off. It's a little barbless
size 18 hook.
2-lb line. Look at that.
Oh, it's annoying. He's downstream now.
Look [laughter] at the rod.
Come on.
Our rod's bent in two.
Come on.
This is a big chub for the XUL. Oh my
god.
Look at that.
Oh, no.
Almost knocked it off.
Yes.
Oh, that's a good size chub as well.
God, no wonder it took me so long to
land him. Tiny
weedy little bloodworm imitation
on a size 18 hook.
A bit of tungsten putty.
And to say I'm only fishing a barbless
hook, there was no way he was going to
come off.
It's embedded in his little bony bit.
There we go.
That is a good size fish.
Now, the sun is very, very bright in
this area as you can probably tell from
the fact that I've set my camera up
underneath a bridge.
But, this is an absolutely fantastic
fish
for the XL setup.
Look at that.
Absolutely cracking chub, probably about
3 and 1/2 lb on a 0.2 to 0.8 g rod.
That was a fight and a half. And it is
species number one ticked off our list
for the session.
Awesome.
>> [music]
>> Well, this is what I like when it comes
to fishing wild venues.
Just come from the main bit of river.
There's a tree blocking it. There's no
other way around than through here.
Where is it?
>> [music]
[music]
[music]
[music]
>> Oh, oh, big job, big job.
Oh my god, look at that rubber band.
There we go.
>> [laughter]
>> Oh, Jesus.
It's like I've came into a bobble on
this setup. Look at that. Oh, I can feel
it rubbing against
some sort of snag.
It was really well stuck in the weed.
Oh, look at the size of that.
Get in.
Just 2-lb leader.
Tiny little bait.
Oh, we got him. Got lucky there as well
cuz you see the line was properly
wrapped around his fins.
Look at that. Right in the scissors, so
to speak.
My soft plastic is somewhere up the
line, I think.
Right, what I'm actually going to do is
I'm going to put the chub between my
legs resting in the water
>> [snorts]
>> because I think if I mess around setting
the big camera up, showing them off to
you guys, um and then releasing him back
into the swim, I think he's going to
spook off any other chub that are down
there, but there's still a couple of
chub down there.
All right, big boy.
Um there's still a couple of chub down
there, so what I'm going to do is
re-rig up another little soft plastic.
I'll show you exactly what I just caught
that chub on.
It was on one of these wormy little
baits, but I trimmed it down. So, I
ripped the head off it, so to speak.
Then thread this onto the hook, but not
completely all the way around,
only halfway up the shank, like so, and
then put a blob of tungsten putty
around the eye of the hook.
And we've got ourselves a tiny little
micro jig that can be thrown on a 0.2 g
setup.
Just still
maybe two or three. Just sat on the edge
of that weed
in the main flow.
Oh, that's another big chub. There we
go.
That's what I've been waiting for.
Had a few more casts.
Oh, it's gone through all the weed. This
is going to be a real struggle.
On the 0.2 g setup.
I've got a nice bream shot, which is
nice.
Well, if I land it.
Getting a bit optimistic, aren't I? Not
got it in the net yet.
It's funny cuz there is a couple of
really big ones down there. This isn't
one of them, believe it or not.
This is one of the average size ones,
probably a little bit smaller than the
one I've got in the net.
Oh, nearly.
Yes, [laughter]
we got him.
Oh, at least he gave me a bait back.
Look.
The little pink soft plastic.
Right corner of his mouth just Oh, I
lost one.
Proper nice chub, though. It's hard to
believe that they're two of the the sort
of average size ones in the swim.
There's a couple of real big ones.
Right, we'll take a look at these.
And then we might try looking for some
more species. I don't think we'll get
another one from here.
Oh, would you look at that? These guys
put up one hell of a scrap on the XUL
gear. Two chub, both of them around
about 3 lb. That is absolutely awesome.
They're both sitting still just for this
brief moment because they've been
flapping around this entire time.
Oh, that is awesome.
From the same spot up against the weeds.
But, since I've probably spooked off
those chub now, I have seen lots of
smaller fish. I'm not sure what they
are, but I can scale right down.
Obviously, we're fishing with a 0.2 g
rod. We can scale right down to
microscopic baits and find out what some
of the smaller fish are that are down
there. I'm almost certain I've seen
gudgeon. I've seen minnows.
Maybe even a couple of little roach or
something like that. Maybe even dace.
Okay, we've had a couple of big fish
now. We'll try for some smaller species
and then we'll work our way further up
the river and maybe find ourselves one
or two more chub on the way as well.
Thanks for the fight, guys. That was
wicked.
But, go and tell all your other species
friends to go and meet me.
See you later.
Right, guys. So, this is where I've just
been catching those chub. There's a
great big weed raft. That's where I was
getting the chub against. Obviously,
after I caught our second fish, that
spooked off the rest of the chub that
were down there. We don't need those
anyway cuz we've ticked them off.
Um and what's happened is then a load of
smaller fish have moved in.
Probably from under the weed and come
out into this open and there's all
different species down there. I can't
quite tell exactly. I think mostly
gudgeon, but there could be a couple of
bonus species in there as well.
Once I get the polarized glasses on, I
get a proper good look. I can see them
down there. There might be a couple of
roach, a couple of dace, maybe.
Really, really positive.
Right, I'm going to scale down now. I
was using a relatively large worm style
bait to try and get a big chub or
something. And now we're going to scale
right down to a little microscopic
bloodworm or something maybe even
similar to that. Um to flick over
towards the opposite bank underneath the
weed raft in hopes of getting another
species from this spot before we move
on.
Right, let's get re-rigged up.
Oh, perch.
That was awesome. [music]
Oh, there's even more chasing it. Oh, it
come between me legs.
Well, it's another species.
Exactly what we're after today.
A fish. Oh, we've got a fish. What's
that?
Oh, it's a perch.
Hey. What chased it by a chub?
>> [laughter]
>> That's funny.
That's a good size perch, you know.
>> [cough]
>> I actually cheated and put on a bigger
bait and I was supposed to be fishing
micro baits.
But, I've put on a slightly bigger bait,
which is too heavy for the rod, but uh
What I'm just trying to get some more
species. Oh, god, he's
I've dropped a perch back and I've
dropped my rod back at the same time.
So, I'm going to have to really
carefully cuz obviously I'm stood in the
river all along this sort of tree line
um we've got a multitude of different
species all the way up. Mostly just
here, but they're all the way down.
And as I just mentioned, there's sort of
a bit of everything. I can see gudgeon
definitely, possibly dace,
maybe little roach, and I've definitely
definitely seen one singular tiny baby
barbel, which is awesome.
In fact, it's just there now. I can see
the barbel right in front of me.
It's about this big. It's swimming
amongst the gudgeon.
Um what I'm going to do though is I'm
going to cheat a little bit because
the bit of tungsten putty I'm putting on
the hook is just seems to be ever so
slightly putting them off. I don't
actually have some action
um
on the rig as it has been normally. But
what I've done is I've changed right
down to a proper microscopic
piece of bloodworm um fake bloodworm
obviously with no weight on the hook at
the minute. I might put some weight up
the line to weight it down to make the
presentation look a bit more natural.
But what I'm doing here is I'm actually
sticking my rod tip underneath the water
and dragging the bait down in front of
these fish cuz it's so shallow and I can
see the fish down there.
I might have a chance at catching them
like this.
Oh, gudgeon attacking it.
Got one. We've got one.
Little tiny baby chicken gudgeon.
Well, that's probably the smallest
gudgeon down there. It is absolutely
tiny but he's nailed that
little fake bloodworm.
Absolutely crushed it. Hopefully I can
get a few more bigger ones of these.
I'll stick him in the net because
obviously he's not Oh, well he jumped
out of the net. Fair play to you. I was
going to say um if I can get one or two
then I can have a little shot can't I
with a few gudgeon. But he's jumped out.
But that's another species ticked off
the list. This could be the key to
getting some of these smaller species to
fish like this. It's a little bit cheaty
really isn't it? Sticking my rod tip
under the water, getting my bait to
flutter right down in front of these
fish and just gently twitching it in
front of them.
>> [music]
>> There's another one. Yes.
I'm watching him take it. That's a
slightly better one.
>> [music]
>> I'm getting a little one. Come and grab
it, attack it, [music] shake its head.
There we go again.
Have another one, look.
We're on a roll now. We've hit the
gudgeon honey hole.
Now, I've just caught [music] absolutely
stacks of low core chicken gudgeons,
which is absolutely fantastic. Look,
I've got handfuls of chicken gudgeons.
This one's actually the smallest one I
caught, and it was the very, very first
one. Bless him, I took him straight
back. Let's have a look at the couple of
biggest ones we got, because we did get
a couple of half decent decent size
gudgeons. And I tell you what,
these aren't even close to the biggest
one I saw down there,
which tells you something, don't it?
So, this one may not look huge, but he
was a
Whoop. Oh, I've dropped him back. Well,
that didn't work out, did it? That was
one of the Well, it's the biggest one I
caught, and it's one of the bigger ones
down there, but it wasn't even close to
some of the ones I'd seen. I'd seen one
or two that were like, oh, this long.
They were absolutely massive they were.
And I'm going to release all these
little chicken gudgeons now, and then
we'll get on looking for some more
species.
Might have a couple more casts in this
spot before I move upstream, because I
have seen some dace and like I say, a
little baby barbel, but uh need to get
cracked on. I've only got a couple hours
left before we have [music] to start
heading home.
Come on. Yes, that's a different
species.
That's a different species. Come on.
I've not got my net to hand.
He wrapped himself up.
It's a dace.
Yes.
Look at that. Oh, he's jumped himself
back in, but we could see it. You could
see clearly as day that was a dace.
Yes, getting.
>> [music]
>> Well, guys, we've reached this section
of the river now, which is a really,
really strong current rapidy section,
loads of big slippy boulders. Um and for
those of you guys that have been around
for more than a year since it's been
about a year since I fished this river.
Well, now it's treacherous. I've walked
up there a few times. You can get up
there, but it's big slippy rocks, deep
pools. It can be pretty treacherous. I
know that up there the only species I've
ever caught has been perch and chub, and
I've not seen a great deal else up
there. So, I don't think it's really
going to be worth me risking me life to
go and try and get some multi species.
I've got about an hour left, so what I'm
going to do is I'm going to head back
downstream, try some of the pools we've
already had a go in, and maybe get one
or two more species to end up this
challenge. Let's go.
Perch.
Big perch.
On the way home.
Well, we don't need to take this species
off,
but I'm sure you guys can get an idea of
the size of this fish.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Oh.
Oh, I was about to show him off
properly. And I was going to say in from
this body of water that's probably one
of the biggest perch you'll find in
here.
And now I'm really [music] curious to
see if there's any more.
It's another species.
>> [music]
>> Got it. Oh, it's saw Oh, he's come off.
No. It's a little baby pike. Really
needed that. That would have been
another species.
>> [music]
[music]
>> Perch.
And another perch is chasing it home.
Don't think I've ever caught so many
[music] perch out of this little river
before.
This session.
I've I
fished it for the last [music] sort of
two seasons. I've sort of dabbled on
here. And another perch. I've just never
[music] had so many perch. Usually I'd
expect to get maybe two or three in a
session here. And today it's just been
like non-stop perch [music] action
whenever I put a slightly larger bait
on.
I'm just getting these guys. Absolutely
loads of them.
I do love them though.
>> [music]
[music]
>> So I was just moving downstream.
And I've spotted a bunch of minnows.
Right down in front of me. I don't know
how I'm going to catch them, but these
are the biggest ones I've seen so far I
think.
I'm going to be very carefully step back
to try not to spook them.
Got one. I've got one.
Oh my god, I got one.
I got one. We got a minnow.
It's another species ticked off.
Just to prove it's in the mouth. Oh,
it's a big minnow as well. Look at that.
On the little soft plastic.
Oh, hook just popped out. God, that was
lucky. I reckon he would come off if I'd
left him any longer.
>> [snorts]
>> Another species of fish. Getting
the humble minnow on a lure. Another
species ticked off.
>> [music]
>> Oh. Got a barbel. We got a barbel. We
got a baby barbel.
Oh my god.
Oh my god.
Come on.
Oh. Get in the net. Get in the net, you
little torpedo. Oh my god, we got one.
Oh.
Yes.
Oh. I was barely talking. Oh, this has
popped out.
Now, I will say I have changed my
rigging slightly
to give a bit more of a natural
presentation. So, we are still fishing
with
um artificial lures, as you can see.
Little tiny bloodworm imitation soft
plastic on a size 18. Um the difference
is I put on quite a big shot,
like an SSG split shot right up the
line, so that I could drop it down. And
when the lead hits the bottom,
then the soft plastic just gently drifts
down to the bottom a bit more naturally,
um as opposed to having the lead weight
around the hook, where it was quite an
aggressive action. And I've just caught
the smallest barbel I've had in
absolutely years.
And it's on a soft plastic as well.
That is absolutely stunning.
Well, guys, you couldn't make it up,
could you? I'm currently kneeling down
in in river, so don't worry. This fish
is nice and safe and cold in the water.
And what I will say is I'm actually
heading back home. This is actually sort
of the end of the session now.
Um
and I just thought I'd try it in some of
the swims where I'd had a go already,
cuz I realized with the gudgeon, the
last gudgeons when I was fishing, I was
catching them one after another. And
that was when I changed the rig
slightly. I moved the weight up away
from the hook and had just a little soft
plastic wafting around on the bottom
nice and naturally, and they were
nailing it. And I figured maybe the
barbel would react the same. The barbel
and gudgeon seem to hang around
together. They both feed on the bottom
in the rocks. And hey presto, within 15
to 20 minutes of being back in this
spot, the spot where there was baby
barbel, hey presto, we've gone and got
one. And it's absolutely stunning. It's
one of the few times when I'm happier to
catch a smaller version of the species
than I am a larger one, because it has
been probably 15 years since I've caught
a barbel this big, possibly even longer.
I'm being very, very careful with him. I
don't want to drop him back straight
away, because I do want to get some
shots with him.
Absolutely stunning and on a soft
plastic artificial lure as well. I
cannot complain. Another fish to the
tally. In a minute we're going to go
through and tally up all the species
that we've caught. I have had so much
fun on that tiny little ultra-light
setup today.
>> [music]
>> Well, guys, what a session we've had
today. Not only have I caught plenty of
different species from this very small
body of water on lures only, I've also
had some fantastic size fish on a 0.2 to
0.8 g rod. It was incredibly hard work
landing some of those chub, but it has
been absolutely phenomenal session. And
in total, let's tally them all up,
because I've not counted them up yet.
Let's think. We've had chub, we've had
perch, we've had stacks of chicken
gudgeons,
we've had dace,
we've had minnows,
and we've had barbel.
Six species in total in six hours.
Species an hour, can't complain. Stacks
of perch, stacks of gudgeon.
Probably about four or five big chub.
It doesn't get much better than that,
does it? I hope you guys have enjoyed
watching. If you want to, don't forget
to subscribe. Like if you liked it. And
of course, I'll catch you guys later.
